Storage Techniques for SMBs to sustain recession‏
With the dotcom boom, the data involved is also booming. The amount of data that needs computing or the data that needs utmost security is increasing at a faster rate. To control IT spending on storage of such digital content, organizations, SMBs or SMEs are looking for new storage technologies.
According to research report from IDC, the amount of data added annually will be 988 exabytes (an exabyte is a billion gigabytes) by next year, thanks to Web 2.0 and rich media. At present, individual or corporate, people are increasingly using rich media for communication, which led to surge in the demand of additional storage.
The feature here discusses the types of the storage technologies that enterprises must implement in the current economic scenario.
1. Open Storage Platform
Sun Microsystems (Oracle) coined the term ‘Open Storage’, but other vendors may soon offer such solutions. Open storage is more economical than closed systems as it uses open source software, which does not require any software licensing fees and upgrade costs. Also, users are not committed to a single vendor for the software.
According to the research firm IDC, the Open Storage Platform will have a market share of 12% by 2011 and therefore Sun is encashing the opportunity. The company pairs its offering with its OpenSolaris operating system and with hardware such as the Sun Storage 7000 series unified storage systems, Sun Storage J4000 series arrays and Sun Fire x4000 storage servers.
2. Storage Virtualization
This is the process of abstracting logical storage from physical storage through Storage Area Networks (SANs). SAN Virtualization attaches remote computer storage devices for example disk arrays, tape libraries etc to servers in such a way that the devices appear as locally attached to the operating system.
Virtualized storage is simplified storage management where tasks like storage provisioning, backup, archiving and disaster recovery are easier and faster as compare to the traditional physical storage. Although the cost and complexity of SANs are dropping, but they are uncommon outside larger enterprises.
Most storage vendors have SAN virtualization offerings such as Microsoft, IBM, EMC, HP and Sun.
3. Thin Provisioning
It optimizes capacity utilization for applications and helps system administrators to maintain free space for future storage needs. It offers energy and storage cost savings.
The technique was pioneered by a company called 3PARdata (now 3PAR). But now, Hitachi Data Systems, EMC, HP also offers thin provisioning platform.
4. Cloud Optimized Storage
To satisfy the computing needs of the users, the cloud computing concept incorporates Software as a Service (SaaS), from whereby a provider licenses an application to customers for use as a service on demand and disabling it after use or after contract expires.
The services are highly scalable, so there is always capacity for your growing data. Also, the firm will pay only for what they use, as the platform works on a pay-per-use basis. The companies who offer cloud storage are Amazon’s S3, HP’s Upline, and Microsoft’s Skydrive.
5. Data Deduplication
It refers to the elimination of redundant data therefore called as Single Instance Storage. Deduplication, also called as ‘intelligent compression,’ where the data object are replaced with pointers to that unique instance of data. It is a CPU intensive task and works well for blocks of data.
According to NetApp, who offers Data ONTAP operating system, the average UNIX or Windows disk volume contains thousands or even millions of duplicate data objects.

Good luck with that. Your model will have to account for irrational decision makers, parameters that constantly change, variables across the genders, and several unknowns. As logical and analytical as one can be, it is worth a hill of beans when it comes to love.

EROSION RESEARCH METHODS
1.2 Defining the objectives
Before deciding on a research programme it is important to define clearly the objectives. I f the purpose is to obtain a practical answer to a practical problem, such as which of two popular rotations is more subject to erosion, then the experimental procedures will be very different from those required to establish long term fundamentals like erosive power of the local rainfall. the scale of the experiments also need to be considered, for analytical studies of detailed points might be done on small plots or in the laboratory, but practical farming operations can only be tested on plots large enough for farm-scale practices. The required accuracy must be agreed, for precise and accurate techniques will be wasted if the question is simply" which of two alternatives is better?"
The use of statistics in the design of experiments and the treatment of results is a difficult problem. Hayward (1968) has looked closely at the results of of many field plot experiments and come to the conclusion that few of them have been scientifically tested. On the other hand the approach commonly taken by the practical conservation research worker is that he is "measuring differences so large that they don't need statistics to explain them"-a most unscientific opinion although it has great appeal to the field worker. In most situations a compromise somewhere between the extreme positions will give the best results. It is important to avoid collecting a great mass of information which is of little value because its reliability is questionable. On the other hand practical conservation policies are not going to be influenced by the value of the third decimal place. If conservation research is to be effective the results must be at some point be translated into action on the ground.
Reconnaissance studies of erosion
The accuracy of measurements
Quantitative measurements of erosion are most frequent and most accurately obtained from permanent plots, but this method is not always suitable. For example exploratory trials to establish the order of magnitude of the loss do not warrant fixed plots. Another case is measuring localized erosion which cannot be fitted onto a plot, like erosion in gullies, or on roads, or caused by overgrazing. In such cases the order of accuracy required maybe very different from crop rotation. .if all the soil eroded from a field plot is collected in tanks and weighed, and then even a coarse measurement of the weights gives an accurate estimation of the soil loss.
Measuring changes in surface level
Several methods for providing a datum for measuring the surface level are described by Glearson (1957). One idea is to drive into the ground spikes or galvanized iron nails about 300 mm long. Measurement for the distance from the top of the spike to ground level will show changes in surface level. When cycles of erosion and deposition are likely, as often happens in gully erosion, the nail is passed through a galvanized-iron washer and driven in flush with the surface. When erosion takes place the washer descends with the soil surface but any subsequent deposition goes on top of the washer, so that it shows the lowest position and the depth of deposition.
Another simple way to record the original level is to press bottle tops into the soil surface. The depth of subsequent erosion is shown by the height of the pedestals where the soil is protected by the bottle tops. Large soil movement in river beds and gullies can be assessed by spraying a collar of paint around rocks and tree roots at soil level. Erosion reveals an unpainted band below the paint line, indicating the depth of soil removed.
Measuring gully erosion
When the progress of gully erosion is being studied, measurements are needed of the horizontal spread of the gully as well as the vertical changes. One method is to put in a line of pegs at a fixed distance from the gully, another is to lay out a rectangular grid of pegs. In either case a measurement from the datum are repeated at regular intervals to establish the rate at which the gully is moving. For this type of survey a photographic record is also useful and quantitative estimates can be made provided the photographs are taken accurately. Markers should be established so that subsequent photographs can be taken from precisely the same point and direction, and the photograph must include some means of measuring the scale.

What is the best kind of surgery for Umbilical Hernia?
Researching the internet on my Umbilical Hernia and after visiting a couple of doctors, I found out there are different kinds of operations you can do. I am looking for the one with minimal scarring, fastest recovery and safest results. Does anyone have experiences which will be helpful? Please give description of the procedure, if you've had this kind of surgery or work in the medical field.
Any alternative healing techniques you can suggest instead of surgery?
An umbilical hernia is a bulge in the abdominal wall at the navel that sometimes contains abdominal tissue, a loop of intestine, fat, or fluid. There is no non-surgical treatment for this...the wall area must be closed to prevent the intestine, fat, etc, from popping through that weakened area. It will not "grow shut" buy using some "alternative healing techniques".
As to the the type of surgery, this is not up to the patient. The doctor will choose the best procedure and he will choose the one that will provide the fastest and safest results. Doctors want to spare the patient as much discomfort as possible and provide for the fatest recovery so they do pick the best procedure to get the job done. The procedure he chooses will be based on the size of your hernia and position of the hernia.
I cannot give a description of the procedure since I have no idea which one he will decide it best for your circumstances.

Gap Inc. Organizational Research
Gap Inc. is a leading international clothing retailer offering attire, accessories and personal care products for men, women, children and babies. They produce under brands such as Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy. Also Gap brand includes Gap, GapKids, babyGap, GapBody and Gap Outlet. They have their headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area, the product development offices are located in New York City, while distribution operations and offices dealing with sourcing activities can be found around the globe.
Gap Inc. has created a "Code of business conduct" in which essential issues of conducting a business, employees’ behaviors and corporate culture are outlined. It contains the letter to employees which states the main principles that operate in Gap Inc. The company was originally founded and to this day is maintaining the principle of conducting business in a responsible, honest and ethical manner. Currently Gap Inc. remains committed to setting and meeting the highest standards of business conduct, because for them nothing less will do. They also make such commitments to their shareholders, neighbors, customers and one another not only because it is a legal duty, but because it's the proper thing to do. The company claims that their reputation depends on the integrity and excellence in everything they do. Clearly such statements shape company’s overall vision of how they operate and what they expect from their employees. This code was designed to promote an ethical work environment, with all the necessary issues descried in it such as reporting the violations, responsibilities, laws that apply to different countries in which the company operates.
Gap Inc. was founded in 1969 by Donald and Doris Fisher in San Francisco, California. When they started there was only one store and a couple of employees. Today, they are one of the world's largest specialty retailers, with fiscal 2004 revenues of $16.3 billion. They are producing and selling clothes to men, women, kids and babies all over the world. Such brands as Gap and Banana Republic are aimed at customers with higher incomes who are willing to buy high quality clothes, although it is not priced too high. Old Navy brand was created to fit the niche of customers such as families willing to have good looking and quality attire, but pay less for it. Many people shopping at Gap are customers in Old Navy as well, because the company’s signature in making clothes can be easily traced. In recent years the company has began production of colognes and other toiletries which are suitable for different seasonal collections and can be matched with certain clothes. Thus Gap stores, offer a full range of products from underwear and perfumes to sports apparel and winter clothes.
As already was mentioned the Gap Inc. customers are successful people who are looking for high quality and reasonable prices. With Old Navy brand it is more of a younger audience with less income to spend, Gap itself aims at middle class buyers wanting a stylish look and excellent customer service treatment. Banana Republic brand is the most expensive and the most chic one out of all presented by Gap Inc. People shopping at Banana Republic are looking for latest styles, comfort and still reasonable prices for the quality they receive. Generally company’s customers are young and middle aged people eager to try something new every season, enthusiastic about color and inspirational design.
Gap’s competitors for apparel, accessories, and personal care products are such famous American brands as Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, DKNY, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger. Those companies are manufacturing similar products, although they are targeting a slightly different customer market. Gap however has to take a lot of effort to stay aloof among them with pricing policies, quality and design in order to retain their customers and try to gain new ones. The external threat from the new entries is a minor one because of number of reasons. The clothing/accessories market is quite difficult to enter, and it takes time to establish a brand name and gain customer loyalty and trust, so in this instance Gap is almost safe at least for some time.
Gap Inc. has stores around the globe and naturally employs people from many foreign countries. While manufacturing and distributing its products, Gap Inc.'s Sourcing and Logistics group, along with their buying agents, draw up production schedules and place orders with approved third-party factories. This process takes place in more than 50 countries where Gap products are made. Clearly Gap involves many intermediaries in making its product, designating much power and responsibilities to the factories and suppliers. It purchases from more than 1,000 vendors in 3,600 factories in more than 50 countries and approximately 13 percent of its products is sourced from China alone. The company also has a comprehensive and publicly available Code of Vendor Conduct and has instituted excellent internal monitoring programs with vendor compliance officers. Gap company was the first U.S. apparel manufacturer that developed an independent monitoring program by agreeing to let representatives of local nongovernmental groups monitor its supplier factories in El Salvador. Gap also supports human rights initiatives through its supplier education programs and a number of other projects and is a participant in the UN Global Compact. Social responsibility for Gap Inc. is a big concern and it engages in many practices to help solve environmental problems. It has number of helpful environmental projects, including a unique, environmentally efficient designed building at its headquarters. Their programs incorporate recycling initiatives for stores, use of wood from certified-sustainable forests for the flooring at its stores, as well as energy efficiency in lighting. Company’s considerations with environmental issues are also addressed in store design and construction; Gap Inc. also does not conduct or endorse animal testing on its products.
Company’s internal policies are accordingly well designed and suited to meet their employees’ expectations. It offers paid volunteer time for headquarters employees, and ensures full medical and dental benefits for domestic partners, as well as a various family-oriented benefits. Throughout the company women hold a considerable number of management positions, including the two women who are among the company’s top eight executives; there are also four women on the 15-member board of directors. Among programs supported by Gap are those focusing on helping unappreciated youth, with an emphasis on academic achievement. Health and human services, including HIV/AIDS prevention and education, community services and the arts are areas of company’s interest and sponsorship.
Bob Fisher became new Chairman of Gap Inc. in 2004 and Paul Pressler was named CEO in 2002 after Millard Drexler retired. The overall leadership style of the company may be characterized as participative leadership where all people are taking active part in building company’s future. Responsibilities are strictly outlined although can be delegated to other people in case of their approval to do so; ethical and lawful approach to conducting business and treating employees are major necessities outlines in the company policy.
